The Algorithm

The algorithm aimes to create an architecture that defies classification and reductionism. It tries to explore unseen levels of resolution and topological complexity in architecture by developing compositional strategies based on a purely algorithmic processes.

In the Synesthesia Blockchain project, algorithms are used to create a structure that appears at once synthetic and organic. The design process strikes a delicate balance between the expected and the unexpected, between control and relinquishment. The algorithms are deterministic as they do not incorporate randomness, but the results are not necessarily entirely foreseeable.

The resulting architecture does not lend itself to visual reductionism. Rather, the processes can devise truly surprising topographies and topologies that go beyond what one could have traditionally conceived. The algorithm operates between chaos and order, both natural and artificial. Any references to nature or existing styles are not integrated into the design process, but are evoked only as associations in the eye of the beholder.

The starting parameter configuration includes:
- Chamber circulation and amount.
- Chamber volume and surface area.
- Chamber distriution, frequency, density and sparseness.
- Structural integrity - Surface secretion


Although the algorithm does not have any preconcieved notions about architecture history, architectural typologies become visible through permutation and iteration.

In the end, 25 starting seeds where manually curated from over 35.000 generations.

A user who obtains all 10 structures from the same starting seed (1 row) will recieve a physical A2 (420x594mm 600 dpi) print of 1 iteration shipped to anywhere in the world without additional cost.


Creator

The Creator

Joris putteneers is multidisciplinary architect and researcher, interested in speculating the anthroposcene through means of software, hardware and media technologies.

His work has been internationally exhibited at MomA New York, Londen design festival, Venice Biennale and multiple film festivals. He has taught studios and workshops internationally at the Bartlett UCL, Texas A&M, KUL Faculty of Architecture and TU Wien.

Since 2017 he has been actively working in his practice where he develops solutions in the fields of Data driven design, Machine learning applications, VFX, web and software development, visualisations and Art direction.
